To return to the articulate steam locomotive theme from a few days ago, the Kitson-Meyer type was not the only large articulated steam engine to be manufactured in the United Kingdom. Another was the Beyer-Garratt type, an example of which appears below, along with that of an unsuccessful competitor, the ‘Modified Fairlie’ type:

The ‘Modified Fairlie’ was essentially a rigid-framed Beyer-Garratt, built to circumvent the various patents that applied to the Beyer-Garratt type.  Although it was successful in doing-so, the design itself was unsuccessful, with only a very small number being constructed.

  1. Good afternoon,

I came across your great blog from my WordPress reader (oumilie.wordpress.com) and was wondering if you would be interested in becoming a book reviewer for Pen & Sword. We are based in South Yorkshire, UK and are the UK’s leading military history publishers.

We have a wide range of titles and I think you might be interested in some of our Transport titles.

Please have a look at our website for more information: http://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/, especially our transport section: http://www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Transport-History/c/65

Let me know what you think,

      Hello Milly

Many thanks for your ‘mail/ comment of 24 March 2016. My apologies for not responding earlier, but I am having ongoing (to date unresolved), issues with accessing my WordPress site.

Thank you too for the invitation to act as a book reviewer for Pen and Sword. As a result of various research projects, I am familiar with your Company’s products and on that basis would be quite happy to act as a reviewer for such titles (both transport and military) as you think could use my abilities.

as a result, I would be very interested in learning more about what the ‘review’ process would entail 9and pen and Sword’s expectations in that regard), and for ease of communication (due to the previously-mentioned WordPress ‘difficulties’), would suggest that you now contact me via my email address. This is l1br2y@gmail.com (that is Lima One Bravo etc. BTW; The ‘word spells ‘Library’, Librarian being one of my qualifications).

I look forward to your reply (via email) with interest, and again, thank you for the invitation.

      Kindest regards.
